Your legal requirements in Mississippi
What the law actually requires where you are — summarized from our jurisdiction guides. Open any topic for the full details.
Mississippi follows the federal OSHA rule (29 CFR 1910.151(b)): no fixed first-aider-to-worker ratio, but where no infirmary or hospital is in near proximity the employer must keep adequately trained first-aiders on staff with supplies readily available. OSHA guidance expects at least one trained responder per shift, with emergency care reachable within 3-4 minutes at high-hazard sites.
Mississippi's Regulations Governing Licensure of Child Care Facilities (MSDH) require that during all hours of operation, an employee holding valid infant, child and adult CPR certification and an employee holding a valid first aid certificate be present anywhere children are. Renewal must be completed through in-person, hands-on training.
Under Miss. Code Ann. § 73-25-37, any person who in good faith and with reasonable care renders emergency care to an injured person at the scene of an emergency is immune from civil liability, except for gross negligence or willful or wanton misconduct. The same section extends immunity to good-faith emergency care using an AED.
Nurses in Mississippi are overseen by the Mississippi Board of Nursing under a self-directed competency model; routine RN and LPN renewal mandates no continuing-education units (20 contact hours only on reinstatement or after more than five years out of practice). BLS is in practice an employer and hospital requirement rather than a licence condition, and is met by any recognized continuing-education activity on an eligible topic.
In Mississippi, personal care homes and adult day care settings are governed by Department of Health standards that require direct-care staff to complete first aid, CPR and Heimlich training. A recognized, up-to-date first-aid and CPR certificate meets this standard, in addition to the worker's occupational training, and must be renewed periodically.
In Mississippi, CPR training is included in the pre-service foster parent training expected before approval, with the exact first-aid and CPR standard set through the agency's training plan rather than a stand-alone published rule. It is one condition alongside the home study, references and background checks, and does not by itself qualify a person to foster.
Online CPR and first aid training is recognized in Mississippi, with federal OSHA accepting blended training (online coursework plus an in-person hands-on skills demonstration) for workplace first aid and CPR. There is no ban on online training; online-only theory is discouraged only where practical skills such as CPR cannot be demonstrated.
